Weekend Writing Prompt #8 – Candour

A word and photo prompt to get your creativity flowing this weekend.  Use the prompts separately or together.  It’s up to you.  Write a piece of flash fiction, a poem, a chapter for your novel…anything you like.  Or take the challenge below – there are no prizes (it’s not a competition) but rather a fun writing exercise.  If you want to share what you come up with, please leave a link to it in the comments.

Prose Challenge – Write a story of any length that includes the following, “The truth?  What is that?”

Poetry Challenge – Write a poem of any length and style that deals with the meaning of “candour” (to be open, to be honest, to be genuine) and its antonym “insincere” (to be guarded, to be false, to be inauthentic).

Can’t wait to read what you have come up with!

  1. “Ok, here it is.” She turned her head just a bit as if she was listening, but she wasn’t. “You want me to say it?”

At that she stopped and made the full turn back to face me. ” I already know. You needn’t bother.”

The lottery ticket seemed to scream from my front pocket but they haven’t learned to talk yet so I was safe. She didn’t know it all. I walked back to the idling car at the curb trying not to smirk but lost.

“Keep the new frying pan, I don’t want it or anything else. Just remember to pick up your dry cleaning.” She swung her shoulders back and let out an obvious breath. Finished with it, with me.

The curve at the end of her block angled her image into the rear view mirror as I drove away. I glanced but didn’t linger. The frayed sport coat would be donated to the cleaners unclaimed bin and the tired Malibu to the veterans. Maybe I’ll send her a Christmas card from St. Barts, maybe not.

    • Thanks for joining in with the Weekend Writing Prompt, Mike. I really enjoyed reading your story, especially the part about lottery tickets not having learned to talk yet 🙂 Hope you enjoy the rest of your week 🙂
