A word and photo prompt to get your creativity flowing this weekend. Use the prompts separately or together. It’s up to you. Write a piece of flash fiction, a poem, a chapter for your novel…anything you like. Or take the challenge below – there are no prizes (it’s not a competition) but rather a fun writing exercise. If you want to share what you come up with, please leave a link to it in the comments.

Challenge
Prose Challenge – Write a 50 word story inspired by the image above. What is it? A blank screen edged in static? A chalkboard with no writing on it? The strange view out of a window, perhaps from a spaceship? You tell us.
Bonus point for including any of the following words: emptiness, void, or abyss.
Poetry Challenge – Write a haiku on the theme of “emptiness”.
Can’t wait to read what you have come up with!

Hello, thank you for the prompt. I was unable to copy the image. However, here are my fifty words:
Edges appear less dark; dusk, the borderland between day and night; life itself, a place of striving and longing, desperately monitoring tides as the strand narrows. The abyss yawns wide and wider, revealing only an unfathomable void, a lightless vacuum, emptiness. How you clutch at the brink, your grasp weakening.

I’m so sorry that you couldn’t copy the image. I’m not sure why that was… 😦 Thanks for sharing your story here though – it captures the essence of emptiness. Great final sentence too 🙂

Good afternoon Sammi,
As I head out the door into the dull gloom of afternoon, I leave a little line in response to the Challenge…it’s either 28 words for the story challenge or an indulgent Haiku…
~ Dark Shaman ~ B ~ DN ~
Once more into darkness my dear dark friend,
To retrieve Fire for an empty hearth.
I ache for her love, a Himalayan Dove,
Who has melted my frozen heart.
~
Enjoy your day SC! Three days of freedom! Rock on! 🙂
Namaste 🙂

Lovely poem. The title works so well with the words. There’s so much to be found in just those four lines. Thanks for joining in with the Weekend Writing Prompt. Have a great weekend. Rock on, indeed! 🙂

Hey Sammi,
Thank you. A curious coincidence, yesterday morning en route to work, I got to mumbling as I passed by the Cathedral – backlit by burning morning Light – I was almost chanting the phrase Hermes, who are you, when at my feet fell a Raven’s feather, a wing tip plume, it turns to twist at its tip in a most delightful way. I think it is a new wand, a wand to engage with the dark. I am finding balance with it…but she is a darkly muse 😉
Thank you for setting the challenge. It brings a wonderful group of people together: such diversity and excellence. We will one day all be famed in print 🙂
Share a wonderful evening with Love and friendship. Take care.
Namaste 🙂

Coincidence or synchronicity? Amazing timing, to appear just when you are chanting those words. Your new feather sounds beautiful ❤ Perfect for engaging with the dark to obtain balance…Darkly muse…Dark Shaman…
This challenge is certainly blessed by a wonderful group of talented writers and poets. I'm honoured that so many return each week and join in.
Thank you. You have a wonderful evening too 🙂

Hey Sammi,
I think both Serendipity and Synchronicity, the twins of benign chaos were there to also lend a hand when the feather fell. It felt like a team effort lol 🙂 Her feather, she is a beautifully Crow like Raven and adorable to the last curling barb. I will cherish her dearly, more dearly than the written word can tell. She brings perfect balance to a Darkly Shaman. Perfect as a partnership: as a pair of blackbirds baked in the one pie. Her feather reminds me of a Bellatrix wand bwahahaha! lol 🙂
She brings balance also to the holder of a Swan’s Feather wand 🙂
So many return here each week because you set a wonderful Challenge, we all have a common denominator, and above all regards and respect for each others work. What more could a Challenge ask for by way of a response? 🙂
Sweet dreams for when you get to Zzzzz. Take care Sammi C.
Namaste 🙂
