Weekend Writing Prompt #75 – Submerge

A word prompt to get your creativity flowing this weekend.  How you use the prompt is up to you.  Write a piece of flash fiction, a poem, a chapter for your novel…anything you like.  Or take the challenge below – there are no prizes – it’s not a competition but rather a fun writing exercise.  If you want to share what you come up with, please leave a link to it in the comments.

Word Prompt

Submerge

Challenge

The challenge is simple: each week you will be given an exact number of words you can use to write a poem or piece of prose.  You can use any format or style you like; go wherever your inspiration takes you.  The only rules are these:

  • your poem / prose must contain this week’s word.  The word does not have to count towards the exact word count total – it can be in the title, or the first letters of the lines of a poem can spell it out – you can be as creative as you want as long as it’s there somewhere.
  • the length of your poem / prose must match the number of words stated in this week’s challenge.  No more.  No less.

Can’t wait to read what you have come up with!

A late entry for this weekend’s challenge.

    Dolphin Bay, my seaside retreat,
    Fair weather finds me,
    On Promenade Street.
    ~
Here squeal Gannets and gluttonous Gulls,
Squabbling over food-scraps whole weeks old.
Being bold as is my fate, I investigate.
    ~
Eww! Not just tasty-treats being contested,
Someone’s body has been divested: a hand,
    Spanned between raptors beaks!
    ~
How gruesome I thought, how absurd!
That a hand should suddenly emerge!
Tis time to purge this beach.
    ~
When then from the surf laughter heard,
But turning to observe said sound merged,
    Else submerged beneath the waves.

Enjoy a pleasant evening, take care to have a wonderful week.

    Namaste 🙂

    • I enjoyed the poem, Dewin. A very British sea-side setting. “Being bold as is my fate, I investigate” – loved this! And was that a mermaid making an appearance at the end?

You have a wonderful week too. Brightest Blessings!

      • Thank you Sammi, Namaste 🙂

        How are you this evening?

A mermaid putting in an appearance at the end? Perhaps it is so, who knows, but what made you think the sound of laughter came from a mermaid? 😉

I was a little sloppy choosing the name of the town and street: something more relevant to the grisly scene being investigated would have been more appropriate. Should you think of anything more apt feel free to make any necessary amendments.

        Thanks for setting the challenge.

Hoping Monday inspired and the rest of the week enthrals. Take care of one and all.

        Namaste 🙂

      • Namaste Sammi 🙂

I’m not saying it was a laughing mermaid but equally I’m not saying it wasn’t a cackling siren either – the slippery wee beastie submerged before being seen. However, one might reasonably assume the laughter and severed hand are in some way related so your dark-intending mermaid may yet prove to be fact! Mystery remains but have no fear for our best investigator is on the job and answers will quickly follow 🙂

However…if it isn’t a mermaid, then what could it have been?

        Take care. Namaste 🙂
