A word prompt to get your creativity flowing this weekend. How you use the prompt is up to you. Write a piece of flash fiction, a poem, a chapter for your novel…anything you like. Or take the challenge below – there are no prizes – it’s not a competition but rather a fun writing exercise. If you want to share what you come up with, please leave a link to it in the comments.
Word Prompt
Unlock
Challenge
The challenge is simple: each week you will be given an exact number of words you can use to write a poem or piece of prose. You can use any format or style you like; go wherever your inspiration takes you. The only rules are these:
- your poem / prose must contain this week’s word. The word does not have to count towards the exact word count total – it can be in the title, or the first letters of the lines of a poem can spell it out – you can be as creative as you want as long as it’s there somewhere.
- the length of your poem / prose must match the number of words stated in this week’s challenge. No more. No less.
Can’t wait to read what you have come up with!

How are you? This my scratch and scrawl as submission for this week’s challenge. I’ve gone over the word count, sorry, disqualified from the off lol 🙂
~ Unlock ~ By~ Dewin Nefol ~
~
Fifty years man and boy,
With no time left to serve,
He’d have got away with it
If he hadn’t lost his nerve.
~
A cat-burglar by profession,
He was master of his trade,
One last crime before time,
And retirement was made!
~
His mark chosen plans hatched,
Premises scouted checked watched,
Climbing atop said tower-block,
Safe cracked locks unlocked.
~
But then just as he was leaving,
A most peculiar feeling,
A premonition an omen a vision:
Haunting moments of in-decision.
~
100 floors up penthouse suite,
Dressed in a body wing-suit,
One step more he’d be free,
His future an assured certainty!
~
But when at the edge ready to go,
He was overcome with vertigo!
He backed away fretfully pacing,
Cold sweat running heart racing!
~
Never before in all his yore,
Had scaling-heights let him down,
He couldn’t breathe only wheeze,
Stars spun round-and-round.
~
And that’s how they found him:
Cold confused and spent.
Lent against a closed air-vent.
Waiting for vertigo to go!
~
But I think it worthy of mention,
Wing-suit was of bad construction,
Stitching poor it would have tore,
Long before he hit the floor.
~
Now fifty years later man and boy:-
Looking back upon his fate,
Still alive when he could’ve died: but,
Now at 80 life wasn’t so great.
~
And so it was upon release day,
Dressed in hand-sown sheets,
Standing atop an aerial walkway,
Ready to repeat past feats!
~
“My life is over my sentence done,”
“It’s been a blast lots of fun.”
“But now I’m tired quite overcome,”
“Ready to fly into the heart of the sun.”
~
There was a moment when we all sighed:
When those gathered hoped he’d fly!
But when he fell to his demise,
‘Through falling tears we watched him rise.
~*~
Thanks for setting the challenge. Have a wonderful week.
Take care. Namaste 🙂
